How'd we drift so far away from where we left off yesterday?
I'm lonely like a castaway Makoto hadn't even been in school at the university for all that long, and he was already homesick. Everywhere he'd turned in that college building, everyone was rushing along like the world was about to end. No one seemed to have any patience, and no one wanted to stop and say hi or get to know each other. The only time Makoto had really had anyone stop to speak to him directly just to chat was when he was walking by a party being thrown in the dorms. It would have been nice if only he could have figured out what the male was trying to say to him. His words were slurring all over the place. He'd gotten so used to his high school life, that being away from his small hometown was a little intense for him. There was an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of his stomach that he was now beginning to worry might be permanent. Not being able to see his friends almost every single day like he did back in high school was probably the hardest part for him. Life just felt a little empty without all of his former teammates being right around the corner whenever he needed them or just wanted to hang out. Another trial for him was definitely the amount of time he spent studying now. He was never a bad student, but now he really had to push himself. There was twice as much work to be done now, if not more. If there was one thing he knew for sure about college life, it'd be that the teachers didn't hold back when it came to laying on the work.
Having only been in college for about two weeks now, he was ashamed to say this was already his second trip back home. He had mixed feelings about the whole thing. Part of him was hoping he'd get used to his new life and wouldn't need to come back home quite so often. Another, bigger part of him hoped he'd continue to make the time to keep coming back this often. After greeting his family again and listening to his father's positive lectures about how he just had to keep at it and all the loneliness would soon fade away, Makoto headed out for the evening. His plan was to catch the early train home in the morning, because his own bed was really calling to him for later tonight. Sleeping where he was used to just felt safe and a lot more comfortable. He wasn't sure he'd ever get used to the rock hard mattress of his dorm bed.
The brunette wandered along until he made it to the playground in the park. There were no children running free, as to be expected in the evening time, so Makoto climbed the jungle gym all the way to the top and let his long legs fall through the bars. He looked up at the sky which seemed to be dimming now and smiled. The sky always looked the same no matter where he happened to be. At least he could always count on that. | OPEN | 525 words | (: |

Kensei didn't have any swim practice or training of any kind to do which left him mostly without any purpose but to enjoy himself for the evening, having just left the house not too long ago for a walk in Iwatobi. Quiet and uneventful days like this gave him a lot of time to reflect on things going on in his head as a way to gather his thoughts. Kensei was part of the Iwatobi swim team while he was doing really well with his classes so far. However, his mind was lingering on Reeve because he felt like the kid really wanted to put in the effort even though he was lacking the technique. "I should probably teach him the techniques when I'm able to get him alone again." Kensei said to himself while he thought it simultaneously as he approached the park. There were certainly no children to be found in the park at this late hour of the day and he assumed that he was alone until he came across the jungle gym. For some reason there was a brunette sitting at the very top of the jungle gym while staring at the sky. Kensei's initial reaction was to ignore him and keep going, but he ended up doing the opposite anyway. "Oi! Why are you up there?" Kensei found himself saying rather blandly and he assumed the brunette's head was in the clouds while the ginger was quite down to earth. How'd we drift so far away from where we left off yesterday?
I'm lonely like a castaway Makoto wasn't even sure how much time had actually passed as he sat there, thinking about everything going on in his life. It was hard to believe that there had been a time in his life when he was actually a little kid playing on this very jungle gym, dragging Haru along with him. There were a lot of memories just lingering around in the air here. Makoto sighed, wondering if there was every going to be a time when life went back to being as simple as it was back then. Before college started, Makoto had considered himself to have gotten it easy. In all honesty, it wasn't like current times were all that difficult. They only felt that way to someone like him who hadn't really gotten a taste of the real world just yet.
The only thing that snapped Makoto out of his thoughts happened to be the sound of a voice coming from a nearby stranger. Quickly, his eyes darted down as he searched for the source. He locked onto an orange haired boy he didn't recognize. Iwatobi was a small town, but there still seemed to be a lot of instances where Makoto was coming across people he didn't recognize. On instinct, he gave the stranger a friendly smile. "Watching the view. The sun's about to set," he responded, figuring that was at least a viable answer. That might not have been the real reason he'd climbed up in the first place, but it didn't mean he didn't actually want to see the sight of it again from his hometown.
Realizing that even though it wasn't necessary, Makoto decided he should probably introduce himself. "Don't think I've seen you around here before. I'm Makoto Tachibana." He kept up his usual, polite smile. | | 297 words | (: |

[attr="class","tttop"] [attr="class","ttimg"] [attr="class","ttlineone"]i get knocked down [attr="class","ttlinetwo"]but I get up again, you're never gonna keep me down [attr="class","ttbody"]The teenage ginger listened to what the brunette had said in response to his question and was satisfied enough before Makoto mentioned that he's never seen Kensei around before. Kensei wasted no time to climb up the jungle gym very quickly like a ninja before softly sitting near Makoto. "About that, I'm not originally from Iwatobi. My parents have been moving around the country a lot the past year. I pretty much live here now, but I also regularly help my father with his martial arts dojo in Tokyo when I'm not doing any training for the Swim Club or homework." Kensei said a little more calmly and was surprised at how talkative he was to Makoto. It wasn't like Kensei to open up to someone this much so early, but Makoto was also a person that he felt like he could talk to and be open with anyway. Still, he didn't want to share too much because he just met this person and he had yet to figure out what kind of person Makoto really was, or was he really happy-go-lucky all the time? "Kensei Yukimura…that's my name. Yours seems…familiar." Kensei said as he introduced himself and pausing to find the right word to describe what he was thinking. It's true that the name was familiar to him as if he read it somewhere, but the trouble was remembering where he read it in the first place. Makoto also had a face that Kensei thought was nearly impossible to forget anyway. How'd we drift so far away from where we left off yesterday?
I'm lonely like a castaway Makoto's mouth dropped for a moment as the kid managed to climb up next to him with complete ease. He was fast, which caught him off guard for some reason. Nevertheless, Makoto just tilted his head to the side with a smile. "That's some speed you got there." If this kid wasn't on a sport's team, he really should have been. Though he didn't know much about track, Makoto would bet he'd be pretty amazing at jumping hurdles.
It only took a split second after for the kid to mention he was in the swim club. Just the mention of the club brought light into Makoto's eyes. He was proud of what his team of four had left behind, and excited to meet a new member. Though he wasn't in it anymore, he was definitely still rooting for them. Rei was the knew captain, after all. Makoto was even hoping to go to a few of their future competitions if he could find the time with all of his classes. He was pretty sure he could. He didn't want to seem like one of those creepy guys who couldn't seem to put high school behind him, but he figured he might end up going down that road until his two other friends graduated. Then again, he was probably being paranoid about it.
Makoto smiled, extending his hand out for the boy to shake. "It's nice to meet you, Yukimura. And if you're on the swim team, the fact that my name sounds familiar isn't too surprising." His other hand reached for the back of his head and he scratched it, slightly embarrassed to be bringing it up. "I was the captain of it last year, and I've still got two good friends on it. Rei and Nagisa." | | 297 words | (: |

"That's some speed you got there." "Really? I still feel like I need to improve my speed in the water despite having a lot of physical strength." Kensei replied while feeling flattered from Makoto's compliment. The brunette was very good at pushing all the right buttons so far and it raised Kensei's curiosity of Makoto. To Kensei's surprise, the brunette extended a hand out to him and said; "It's nice to meet you, Yukimura. And if you're on the swim team, the fact that my name sounds familiar isn't too surprising." His other hand reached for the back of his head and he scratched it, slightly embarrassed to be bringing it up. "I was the captain of it last year, and I've still got two good friends on it. I was the captain of my junior high school swimming team in my last year, and I was able to lead them to regionals. Hazuki and Ryugazaki are good comrades and teachers to have. However, Reeve Kasamatsu has a tremendous amount to learn because he only knows how to dog-paddle."Kensei said after shaking Makoto's hand while flashing a genuine smile before becoming serious once more. "I ask for your pardon if it's too personal, but what do you do now since you have graduated?" Kensei asked Makoto, unsure if it was a touchy subject or not. How'd we drift so far away from where we left off yesterday?
I'm lonely like a castaway Makto tilted his head to the side, looking at him with his usual bright smile across his face. "Yeah, well, there's always room for improvement, but that doesn't mean you can't take pride in what you've already got going on." He was a big fan of positive motivation, wanting everyone to feel appreciated. He also knew how hard people involved in swimming and other sports worked, so they definitely deserved credit when something was obviously paying off.
"Kasamatsu? I don't believe I've heard that name before." Maybe he was a first year, or maybe he just hadn't run into him in the past in any situations. "I'm sure he'll be fine as long as everyone's supportive. Poor Rei couldn't even swim when he joined the club, and he turned out to be incredible." Makoto laughed, thinking about how good he used to be at sinking. He couldn't take credit for him learning how to swim, but he was still incredibly proud of Rei and how far he had gone. He shook the boy's hand with his usual smile still across his face.
He looked like he was taking a moment to think while looking up at the sky before looking back over at the kid. "Well, I go to the University of Tokyo now." He really didn't want to get into how that was treating him, because it would definitely bring the mood down. "I'm studying to be a swim instructor. I want to coach kids, teach people how to swim, and just help people in general. I think that's the best way for me to do that." His face lit up when he spoke about the career in his future. He'd really found what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. That was what really pulled him through all the more difficult times. | | 307 words | (: |

This was very true coming from Makoto, but Kensei was always hard on himself to begin with. He hadn't even thought about taking pride in what he has accomplished with his training, with martial arts being his own specialty. "You're right Tachibana, I should take pride in how far I have come." Kensei admitted with honesty after reflecting on the results of his discipline. Soon afterwards, Makoto explained that he was going to Tokyo University to study to become a swim instructor because he wanted to coach kids. "I can already tell that you will be a great coach someday. Everything has to fall into place eventually, it always does…" Kensei said very calmly with a straight face. Makoto's attitude and personality both seemed to be the perfect match for the kind of career he was pursuing. The ginger thought about what kind of career he would like to pursue, and he concluded he would like to either competitively or take over his father's business if his first option didn't work out. "I'll probably end up going to Tokyo University myself in three years, but I would like to swim competitively because it's challenging for me. However, should that not work out, I could become a martial arts or swimming instructor, maybe even a personal trainer. My personal goal is to get the Iwatobi team to nationals, if I can." Kensei said rather modestly as he thought about it. He really hoped that he could achieve his goals and make those closest to him proud of him, but what he desired the most were people he could truly call his friends. How'd we drift so far away from where we left off yesterday?
I'm lonely like a castaway You're right Tachibana, I should take pride in how far I have come.
Makoto nodded at that. "Absolutely," he said, reassuring him once more. It was hard for certain people to let themselves feel good about their accomplishments when they still felt like they had such a long way to go. Hell, he often wondered if Rin was one of those people. He swiped that thought aside. Rin was just dedicated, always looking to improve. Every time he saw Rin or Haru swim while they were still in high school, Makoto felt like they'd just kept getting better. He wondered if they'd ever come to a stand still with swimming. It was doubtful. They were going to make it all the way to the Olympics. Makoto was sure of it.
I can already tell that you will be a great coach someday. Everything has to fall into place eventually, it always does…
Makoto reached up and scratched the back of his head, feeling flattered by that statement. "Thanks. It's means a lot to me when I get encouragement like that." That wasn't a lie either. With all of his amazing swimming friends, Makoto's choice to become an instructor was definitely not spotlighted. For a moment, he felt a twinge of sadness for the fact that in reality... no one really cared. He wasn't going on to do great things like Haru and Rin were. In the long run, he'd probably get left behind all together. Makoto shook off that thought. This wasn't the time to be falling back into those depressing thoughts. He would save those for later. Luckily, on the outside he made it nearly impossible to tell that anything was bothering him at all. Or, at least he hoped he would. Makoto was good at throwing himself in denial when he needed to appear happy to everyone else.
Makoto chuckled when Kensei started going on about what he wanted to do with his life and all the choices he'd lifted. "It's good to have so many dreams and options." He smiled, being reminded a little bit of Nagisa when he'd spoken. Nagisa wanted to do just about everything under the sun, most of them completely random and non-related to anything he was doing now, but that's just one of the things Makoto liked about the boy. "Make sure you hold onto that spirit, and I'm sure you'll make it far." | | 402 words | (: |
