It was a dark fate that he had been sentenced to, this endless exile to the realm of the dishonoured dead. It was evidence of his brother's cowardice-- Thor could not bring himself to order his execution, and yet he virtually had made him dead by his exiling him to Niflheim.
Niflheim, the cold, foggy, barren realm, the place where Loki would now live out the rest of his days, and then at last die and remain here yet. Loki Laufeyson was dead to Asgard, dead to Midgard, dead to every one of the nine realms but this.
Loki traversed the wasteland, but there was no sign of life in this horrid place. The mist shrouded everything like an executioner's cloak, and blocked out the light. Sometimes, Loki thought he could see shadows moving in the mist, and he would wait for some undead horror to spring out at him and drag him too into its eerie, spectral state. But it never came for him.
Time was merely a word in Niflheim. There was no day or night, there was just being, and it was maddening. And so Loki travelled, hoping to find some difference in the land he was doomed to for millenium.
It was in this manner that Loki came upon a cave in the rocks. From its entrance, a golden light issued forth, soft and bright in the darkness of Niflheim. There was almost a pull, as if something was beckoning, waiting.
The fallen son of Asgard's footsteps crunched on small pebbles as he entered the cave, bending to keep his head from scraping the rough stone ceiling. At the far end of the cavern lay a small casket, glowing a deep golden-yellow. Loki knew what it was, the gem inside the casket. It was the Time Stone, one of the Infinity Stones, the most powerful entities in the universe. And this one... this one gave the user control over past, present, and future. Heart racing, Loki lifted the gem from the casket. It fit inside his palms easily. With this, Loki could change his past. He could cure himself of regret. He could bring Frigga back, undo the damage he did. Then, after that, he could make everything as he ever wanted it to be.
And so, Loki took the Infinity Stone and channelled its power. But Thor's statement years ago about the Aether's power being too much for him applied to this as well. As he tried to access the past, a splitting pain shot through his body. Golden-yellow light flashed and flared, and then everything went dark.
And thus began the shattering of time. Whole sections of cities and lands everywhere were altered, launched back into their former times. Friends disappeared, while dead relatives from a century ago came into the present world through a misty, golden-yellow barrier. Entire towns were frozen in time and unaccessible.
All across the nine realms and the cosmos there was chaos. The time rifts grew and spread. On Earth, the conflicts between Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, and their friends and allies, which had reached unprecedented levels, were interrupted by this event.
The Avengers were needed once more, but they could not fight this alone. No one on Earth understood what was happening, what had just occured. But one thing was certain-- Earth's Mightiest Heroes needed to assemble, and the sooner both sides realize this and find those that do understand, the better.
The clock has stopped ticking, and the countdown has begun.
