Personality: Kensei is very complicated as he is sophisticated when compared to other teenagers, but for very good reason. He was often picked on by bullies when he was very young in elementary school, and used his knowledge of martial arts to stand up for himself. The bullying eventually ceased over a period of years, but it also conditioned him into being very intimidating to others. Kensei is only defensive on the outside because he's put up mental walls around himself with the intention of keeping people from trying to mess with him. It has also unintentionally caused potential friends to distance themselves from him to avoid angering him, even though he stands up for others that get picked on by bullies or the like. Kensei is willing to bring down his walls for people he feels he can trust enough to let his friendlier and more compassionate side to come out. The truth is that he really does want to make friends, but he has a really hard time making them in the first place and he gets embarrassed easily when confessing his true feelings.
History: Kensei was originally a very compassionate young boy that strived to be the best he could. However, that same compassion became shielded by walls of defensiveness and aggression when he became bullied by classmates he had opened himself up to. He felt betrayed as he resorted to his martial arts to stand up to them while closing off his heart to keep him from projecting weakness. It was a matter of time until Kensei actually became the kind of person that most people felt uncomfortable to be around. His parents still saw the good in him even though other people found it hard to believe that he was actually a good person on the inside.
The ginger joined a swimming club In junior high as a sport he thought he could do without anyone getting in the way or holding him back. Kensei really hadn't swam that much before he joined the club, but apparently he was really good at it and got on the team with flying colors. By his graduating year, he had helped the team reach so many victories that they even made it to regionals as the team's MVP and team captain just prior to graduating from junior high. His time with the team had opened himself up to the possibility that he could bring down his walls. Kensei's only truly happy times were when he was with his teammates, but that didn't last long because his parents did a bit of moving around in Japan after he graduated and hopped from high school to high school. He started to become detached from social interactions because he expected to keep moving around like some gypsy. Eventually they settled into the Tokyo area and Kensei started to attend Iwatobi starting as a second year. He is currently in the Iwatobi Swim Club and he expects that he will be part of the team. What he might not expect will certainly surprise him in more ways than one.
