- Katsu Kuse - Older Brother - Alive - Yuu lives with Katsu. Katsu took the blame for killing their mother, and he feels guilty about what she did to Yuu growing up even if he does still love their mother.
- Eri Hattori - Grandmother - Alive - She's afraid of Yuu, and she despises him for killing her daughter (his mother). She wants nothing but the worst and is constantly telling Katsu to send him back where he belongs.

Personality:
Yuu often comes off as childish, finding joy in some of the simplest activities. It's easy to occupy him, which is probably in everyone's best interest, considering that when he's bored he has a much harder time fighting off the urges he has. His urges make him want to mess with people and use them as his own toys. He has no qualms about hurting others, and in fact he sometimes finds it funny in some occasions to watch people suffer. He doesn't care about the lives of others or his own life for that matter. He considers death to be no big deal. It's unavoidable, and it happens to everyone.
He's a free spirit. He doesn't really think before he acts, but even if he did, the result would most likely be the exact same. Yuu is a loose canon, constantly doing the unpredictable when he acts on his impulses. His attention span is also short, and he has a tendency to stare off into space and daydreams often. On occasion he's even been known to just walk away in the middle of a conversation that he doesn't have any interest in.
Yuu skips around often humming or singing to himself, truly dancing to his own beat. He isn't a follower and never does things for other people unless there's something in it for him. There had been people in his life that had spoken about their being hope for him to get better, but those people had always just made him laugh. In Yuu's mind, there is absolutely nothing wrong with him. He's incredibly broken, and he doesn't even know it. He's been warped into a state of crazy, having had so much damage done to his mind that it's seemingly irreversible.
It isn't that Yuu is incapable of caring about others, he's just never felt any actual attachments to others that has made him care about their well-being. He's also never had anyone care about him as more than just a crazy kid, which has never bothered him in the slightest. He takes everyone's insults with a grin, and he's never even imagined himself in any other way. He finds the way he lives life to be more open and exciting where he finds other people to just be so plain.
History:
Yuu was born into a poor family. His father died before he was even born, having a heart attack during a fight he was having with his wife about money. It was sudden, but it wasn't like he hadn't been warned time and time again to watch his stress levels. Emi, Yuu's mother, being pregnant with her second child and a widow had to work twice as hard to keep the family from starving. Eventually she had to call on her own mother, Yuu's grandmother, for help. Since Yuu's brother was six at the time, he wasn't capable of helping out with money other than to go begging adults on the streets, hoping they'd take pity on a poor kid.
When Yuu was finally born, his mother was quick to begin resenting him. It didn't help that he was born tiny, pale, and rather sickly looking. It made her worry that she was going to have to be paying a million medical bills in the future. Which, much to her relief, other than being petite and undernourished while he was a fetus, there wasn't really anything physically wrong with him. Regardless, she treated the boy less than nice growing up. By the time he was four, she was already locking him up in dark rooms for no apparent reasons and beating him black and blue. Often times she made him do stupid made up tasks that were too much for any young child to do, and tell him that he needed to make momma proud.
Yuu was always doing everything his mother asked of him in fear of all the punishments he'd end up getting. He worked as hard as he could manage every single day just to attempt to make his mother proud, something that never happened. By the time Yuu was five he was already a better con artist then his other brother, capable of letting lies roll off the tip of his tongue to guilt people out of their money. By the time he was six, he'd given that up all together and went straight for the source. He learned to be light on his feet and rather quick, using those skills to pickpocket people in the streets which he did multiple times a day.
Yuu's brother, Katsu, was often complaining about all of it. He didn't enjoy cheating people out of his money, which Yuu always hoped would make him his mother's favorite, but it never did. She would baby his brother and show him love, telling him that they needed to do it for survival and making him feel okay. Even when Yuu faked as though he felt bad, he'd simply end up with bruises all over. His brother always seemed to get so much kindness and love from his mother that there was never any left for him.
When Yuu was about eight, he'd stopped talking. His mother had broken him down enough with all of her mental and physical abuse that something inside of the young boy broke. He was already a bit off before hand, not really ever feeling guilty for much of anything he did. His grandmother never once tried to step in and protect him from his vicious mother. Despite having a family, Yuu was alone. His mother's hatred ate at him and ate at him until one day he'd just snapped all together. When he started speaking again, there was something completely different about the boy. His speech patterns had changed into much more crazy ones, and he was constantly laughing for no reason. He'd become far too happy and also a lot more dangerous.
When Yuu's mother would punish him after that snapping point, he'd tell her he'd deserved it, asking for more. If anything his mother only got harsher, doing her best to attempt to make him cry like she used to be able to but it seemed pointless. Yuu had changed too much, which was all too apparent when he began physically hurting his brother and his grandmother. At first it was small things, he'd pretend to bump into them or slice them with a piece of paper but then it got more dangerous. He'd find fun in throwing sharp objects in their directions and knocking things down around their small apartment in attempts to crush them all while giggling just a little too hard about it.
After Yuu put a kitchen fork through his brother's hand while they were eating dinner one night, his mother had started keeping him in his room almost all of the time with a lock on the door. She barely fed him, part of her secretly wishing he would just starve to death and parish inside of that room. She didn't let him go to school or even bother teaching him anything. The only thing she'd left him in his room with were sewing tools to occupy himself with. Instead of doing anything logical with said tools, he took it upon himself to start stitching his own body pointlessly, finding it to be fun and being really fond of the way it looked.
One day while his older brother, Katsu, was at school and his grandmother was off at work, his mother let him out of the room in order to do some of the house hold chores since she had no fear of him actually hurting the mother he so desperately wanted approval from. Unfortunately for her, she was completely wrong. While she was cleaning a separate area of the house, Yuu saw an opportunity, walking over to her giving their heavy china cabinet filled with random odds and ends right over onto her. Not only did it crush her but it broke, piercing her with glass.
When Katsu returned home from school, he was mortified to see his brother sitting on their couch watching cartoons while their mother was laying dead on the floor. At first he had no idea what to do, panicking and screaming at Yuu while he sort of just stared at him. When his grandmother got home, there were many more tears had while she interrogated (more like screamed at) Yuu to find answers as to how such a thing happened. When she'd called the police, it was actually Katsu who'd stepped up, taking the blame for his brother. He'd told them that he'd accidentally knocked it over, which confused Yuu, but in his mind his brother owed him anyways for taking all of their mother's attention for himself.
Yuu's grandmother ended up with custody of both him and his brother. The problem was that she didn't want Yuu. After what had happened with his mother, her daughter, she despised the child just as much. On top of that, she was afraid of him. So, she got him locked up in the psychiatric hospital where she would no longer have to deal with him. Given Yuu's personality, it wasn't that hard to send him there. It was only when he was twelve and his older brother was eighteen that he'd gotten visits. It turned out that Katsu had moved out, gotten a real job and started living on his own. That apartment had become too much for him. Every time he walked into their living room he was reminded of their mother. However, the older he got the more he'd realized just how guilty she was when it came to how she'd treated his brother. It was probably why he'd ended up visited him every so often despite what he'd done and why he'd also taken the blame. He felt guilty for not doing anything about it.
When Yuu turned eighteen, his brother decided to get permission to move him out of the hospital and into his apartment. As long as he took his medication, didn't have too much human contact, and Katsu kept sedatives on hand, he was allowed to do so. Yuu actually did a little better when it came to the listening to everyone's rules against hurting everyone when he'd moved in with him only because he found living with Katsu a lot less boring than being stuck in the hospital. Though he fought the urges with the help of medication (even though often times he only faked taking it), he still had a habit of putting stitches into himself all over the place.
Living in Iwatobi, Katsu also doesn't allow Yuu to go anywhere without him, but Yuu still finds himself sneaking out either way. With how he was raised, he learned his way around things and had learned to pick locks rather easily. Yuu doesn't really understand Katsu's reasoning for taking him in, but he doesn't question it either considering he much prefers he current life.
