Personality:
Rei values facts. figures, and logic above anything else, except beauty. Well, it's more that he allows beauty to tie all of his strengths together even though it may lead to his shortcomings as well. As much as he calculates how to act he forgets that sometimes it's better to not do so and he ends ups not having fun instead. Such an example is when he was unable to swim until Haru eventually talked some sense into him. Even so sometimes he still falls to himself when frustrated or upset.
Articulating his feelings is something that stumps Rei almost always. It's hard to put emotions into numbers, though he does try. This leads to random outbursts that can either be hurtful or confusing which Rei really does not intend. Sometimes Rei even finds himself pushing others away so he doesn't have to deal with his emotions. It's not something he enjoys, but he finds it too hard to cope otherwise.
Unlike most students when faced with a difficult problem Rei is elated rather than put down. He loves the prospect of a challenge and is determined to see it trough to completion, refusing to give up until he sees it solved. Unless it's dealing with his own emotional problems.
Due to his father being constantly away and his trouble with holding onto friendships Rei fears that he will lose his current friends as well. He considers himself a hard person to deal with since he knows how obsessive he can be over his (and the other's) appearance(s). He strives for perfection with everything and can lose his calm facade if his vision is ruined.

History:
Growing up was a lonely experience for Rei even though it really wasn’t. His dad was never home, but his mom (and brother) always were, his older brother less so than their mother. Mother. To Rei she was everything good in the world. She was wise, sweet, and fair. Her soul was pure and her heart untainted. She was beautiful outside and within; Rei was inspired. He wanted to be as much like her as possible because, for him, she represented perfection and that was something beautiful. His brother wasn’t and so Rei ignored him. Perhaps it was inability to make friends that was the push, but Rei latched onto that sense of perfection and did not want to let go.
As Rei got older he learned that not everything could be compared to his mother and that there were different forms of perfection. There was the way people moved, scores on tests, flowers in bloom, a clean space, and a clean sense of self. Knowing answers and being able to figure them out. Being smart. Numbers. They came easily to Rei except for when they didn't; then Rei would do anything within his ability to solve them. When he walked by a track and field competition he saw that the participants were graceful in the way they ran, in how their bodies arched; there was power built into the very core of their beings– all of it could be traced down to angles and measurements.
The more Rei found himself the less he saw of his brother. His older brother didn't go out any more or less, but the two drifted further apart. Shigeru’s room was a mess and Rei’s was spotless. Rei always did his homework whereas his brother barely passed. He had friends, Rei didn't. Rei would spend the days with his mother and told himself that it was okay. She was enough, and even if they went away after a while Rei had friends. They were kind of like his father if he thought about it enough, though his father was much better off than any of them. And he brought Rei presents whenever he came home. One time he even showed Rei how to run properly; it turned out his father used to run marathons. His form was stunning even after all the years. Rei didn't need friends when his parents and studies were enough.
For the next few years Rei focused on growing academically as well as physically. He pushed his endurance further and further each week and studied until he got an A, if not a 100% on every test. He did exercises between study breaks and he studied between exercise breaks. By the time he was old enough to join track and field his coaches were impressed and rightfully so. Rei’s forms were perfect and his results outstanding for his first year, but he wasn’t a natural. The awe wore down and the coaches began to see that Rei was almost too clinical. He looked outstanding, but it felt like there was nothing more there than needed to be. No personality. Yet he scored points and ranked in the top three in nearly every event.
Shigeru went off to college, but Rei didn’t feel any better after his brother left. He felt like one those chocolate bunnies received on Easter- hollow. Not that Rei would acknowledge that, of course. There were bigger and better things to worry about, like high school. After graduating at the top of his year Rei was unwilling to relinquish his title. Nor of his one as a track star (though that one was given to himself by himself). He didn’t. Things were going as normal, if not a bit strained due to the sudden increase of both mental and physical activity. That is, they were going normally until a small bundle of yellow and energy steamrolled into Rei’s life, or would swam be the better word?
At first Rei was aggravated, but then he became annoyed. Everywhere he went Nagisa was following him and talking about his swim club and how they needed a fourth member. He was a disgusting little boy, always with his shirt untucked and with food in his hands. He was forward to the point of being rude and had absolutely no regard for personal space. It infuriated Rei, but Nagisa was the first student he really paid attention to. Perhaps he had some filling after all. Still, Rei refused to abandon his track days until Nagisa talked about how Haru swam. That caught his attention. All beautiful things did.
Watching Haru swim tipped Rei’s world upside-down and it was frustrating. He couldn’t swim, but the quiet boy made him want to. So, he studied. And failed. He studied some more and failed again. His forms were perfect and he had the strength, so why was he sinking? After spending years flying through the air this experience was haunting, but Rei wasn’t one to give up. Then it turned out what was wrong was that his form was too perfect and everything was planned out too well. It took a second for it to sink in, and then he swam. It felt like flying all over again.
All too soon and it felt like, for the first time, that he was the one being pushed away. There was an unknown yet named factor pushing their nice little union and Rei wasn't having any of it; and so he found out about Rin. Found out about the problem and eventually took care of it. It was annoying, but needed to be done. And it made his new friends happy even if it made Rei not.
Things went on and relations improved. The crush that Rei had on Haru and hardly acknowledged went away and his swimming improved. Though all too soon it seemed as though things had to sour. Makoto and Haru had a falling out, there was a new rival, and Nagisa was dating guys. It took Rei a while before he realized why Nagisa being in relationships bothered him. It was the fact that Nagisa was in relationships with guys who weren't Rei. Yet after Rin and Haru left then came back things seemed to righten themselves out, much to Rei's relief.
Until his senpais graduated and he was voted team captain. Oh, and now he has to deal with developing feelings for his best friend while simultaneously being afraid of losing him.
