Personality:
Rin is high strung and determined. When he picks a goal he sinks his teeth into it and doesn't let go. It's been his dream to go to the Olympics since he was in grade school, and even through the hardships he faced he hasn't let go of it. Even when it seemed impossible he held onto the small thread of hope. Even if it took Haru and the others in the pool with him to bring back that ideal in full force.
Though it takes a lot to discourage him, when he goes on a downward spiral he falls hard. He tends to distance himself from the people he cares about and the things he loves. This only proves to worsen his mood, causing him to lash out eventually. He's prone to loneliness when he's separated from his friends. He can come off as sensitive, but it's usually the product of bottling his emotions for too long and they burst from him in all sorts of situations. Whether it be lashing out in anger and frustration, or sobbing all over his best friend, or both.
When he's at his peak, he's a driving force in many people's lives. He doesn't just want to meet his goals by any means necessary. He's not the kind of person who would put down others to achieve what he wants. He's the kind of person to pull others up with him. That's what made him a good team captain.

History: Rin's early childhood was more or less normal, though his entire life all he could remember was being surrounded bu water. His mother insists that he was swimming before he could even walk. Though he wasn't entirely sure he believed that story. His father had a dream of going to the Olympics, but was unable to attain that dream, instead he went on to give up on it and become a fisherman to be closer to his family.
Rin was still very young when his father died, his sister Gou even younger. It was a tragic accident. A storm overtook his father's fishing boat. He can still remember his mother's face when the police came to their door to ask her to identify the body, though he hadn't known what was happening at the time. Though it had been a dream before his father's death, his passing solidified it for him. He would achieve what his father did not, and get to the Olympics. He wanted to swim relay, and he would do anything to get there.
Rin went to elementary school with Sousuke Yamazaki. They were close and on the same swim team, but the other boy didn't have the same drive as he did when it came to the relay. When he met Nagisa and the others he insisted they swim with him. It was hard to convince Haru to join him on the relay but he managed it fairly easily. It was shortly after that he learned he would be transferring to a boarding school in Australia.
His host parents were very kind, but he had a lot of trouble when he first arrived. Not being able to be understood by anyone, and having very little understanding of what others were saying was discouraging. He quickly found school there an absolute nightmare. He had to not only speak another language, but learn in it as well. It was his own personal kind of hell. He had a hard time connecting with his fellow classmates, and his new teammates. The swimmers there were on a whole other level.
When he returned for the New Year and swam with Haru, it was simply salt in the wound. Sure, he might not be able to catch up with world class swimmers in his age group, but with all of his training he should have been able to catch up with Haru. Haru who didn't train so much as jump into water any time he so much as found himself in front of a knee-deep puddle. However, the other boy beat him and he couldn't help but feel worthless after that.
His training didn't progress much after that. Getting so bad, that his mother decided to bring him back to Japan. There was no use in paying for special training if he wasn't improving there. When he returned home, he assumed he would be going to Iwatobi with his sister. When he returned home, however, he learned that was not the case. He would be going back to another boarding school. Samezuka academy. As it turned out, his mother wasn't letting him give up on his former dream, she just believed being in Australia wasn't helping matters.
When he arrived at school he was still discouraged. He didn't really bother with swimming, at least not until he ran into Haru and the other's once more. Swimming against him ignited something in him he had thought he lost. Despite not being totally back into his care-free self, he was determined again.
It was better when they all finally reunited in their relay together. Even if it had gotten them all disqualified. The next year was better, more or less. Sousuke turned back up, and it was good having his childhood best friend back. Better that he seemed finally interested in being on a relay team with him. With Momo and Nitori he was sure they had at least a chance. Of course, things don't pan out the way one might hope them to.
Still he was being scouted for schools. The plan was to go back to Australia and train there in University. First, he had to get Haru on board. Had to give him some semblance of a goal. He had to make him want it. He took Haru on a trip to Australia, and it seemed to bring him to some sort of decision.
When it came to graduation, the offers and scholarships were lengthy. It was tempting to go back to Australia, but he couldn't imagine that kind of isolation again. On top of that, he had been offered a full ride at the University of Tokyo. He was confident that something like that would help him towards his goals. Being isolated from his friends had only been a detriment to his training in the past. He was confident this was the right choice.
