Personality:
Kaida really loves to have fun, and is bored rather easily. Thanks to that, he's developed some interesting bad habits. Poking fun at people just happens to be one of them. He'll pick a verbal fight with someone or play some kind of rude prank on them just to cure his own boredom. It's rare that he regrets any of the tricks he pulls. Even when he's not deliberately being a jerk, a lot of people find him to be rather annoying. Even in his normal conversations, he's constantly throwing words that other people may find rude at whoever he's talking to, but really a lot of the times, he's just trying to be playful. He's got a bad habit of pushing people's limits just to entertain himself.
When someone manages to tolerate him enough to become his friend, he's actually incredibly loyal. He'll still pick on his own friends for a laugh or two, but he'll be damned if he's going to let anybody else do it. When it comes to caring about someone in a romantic way, Kaida falls in love way too easily. He has a habit of becoming obsessed with his crushes, but he's only ever really had one crush at a time. None of his past crushes have ever really returned any of his feelings that he's aware of, but that's probably because he has a tendency to become a jealous monster. Even if someone isn't his, he has been known to act like he has some sort of a claim on them. His obsessions die down after a while, but usually he just drops one crazy infatuation for another. Someone actually returning his affections might be a dangerous thing.
Kaida has a strong sweet tooth. He's almost always eating some type of candy or junk food, but he somehow manages to run enough of it off. People have told him that he really should quit before it catches up to him, but Kaida couldn't be bothered to listen. He doesn't really have much regard for authority. If someone tells him not to do something, it probably means he's going to end up doing it. It's almost as though he can't help himself.
History:
Kaida Sotomura grew up in a small town in Japan that wasn't located too far away from Iwatobi. It was one of those places where everyone knew everybody, but nobody knew anyone's secrets. To all the other town's people, Kaida's life story seemed simple. He was an only child to a single parent, his father. Everyone believed him to be a daddy's boy. He always did everything his father told him to do, working side by side at his auto-body shop every day after school and helping out anyone his father asked him to with any errand they needed. There were constant yes sir's and right away, father's flowing out of his mouth far too often. Everyone thought he was just a great kid and incredibly respectful.
The truth, however, was that Kaida hated his father. He hated him with a deep passion, wanting nothing more than to take him out and make a run for it. What the rest of the town failed to realize was that his father was actually an abusive drunk. Of course, they knew he had a drinking problem, they just all seemed to fail at paying attention to how bad it really was at home. Kaida hated everyone in his town for their ignorance as well. He was afraid of his father, always doing everything he asked in fear of the consequences. Any little slip up he made, his father liked to respond with his fists. He usually left the marks where no one noticed, but when he occasionally slipped up and gave him wounds to the face, he'd just go on and on to everyone around about how his son was just two skinny to stand up to the bullies who always seemed to be picking on him at school. Kaida always had to force himself to stomach his father's lies. In truthfulness, everyone at school pretty much ignored the quiet kid and there weren't really any issues.
Kaida's father blamed him for what happened to his mother. She took her own life when Kaida was only two years old, not being able to handle the pressures of motherhood. She had a history of mental health disorders, but his father didn't even seem to take that into consideration before shoving all the blame his son's way. His father made sure to tell him that if it hadn't been for his neediness and greedy little heart, she might still be around. Kaida had never really been able to remember much about his mother, but deep down he wondered if perhaps she did what she did because his father was just as bad to her as he was to him.
As even more punishment aside from the physical abuse, Kaida's father had always kept him from doing anything he loved. He'd grown very fond of music, but he'd only been able to actually do anything musically related when his father was passed out. On top of that, he only played his guitar (in which he'd fond in the storage unit of his father's shop) in the garage to ensure that he wouldn't wake him. He hid it under his bed during the day. Kaida had tried to make friends every now and then, but his father always found a reason to make Kaida cut connections with them. Even though he apparently wasn't allowed to make his own friends, his father wouldn't hesitate to try and set him up with the daughters' of his own friends in which Kaida had zero interest in. He'd become pretty good at faking it, however, being far too afraid of what his father would do if he hadn't. Everything down to what he felt was his true personality had to be locked inside. He did every thing he could to see like the perfect child.
The cycle went on and on until finally Kaida hit the age of sixteen. He'd saved up enough money to move out, and planned to do so immediately after graduation. Only, when he'd decided to tell his father, he'd basically attempted to ban him from ever leaving. His father started in on him as usual, when finally something inside of Kaida just decided he couldn't do it anymore. He couldn't continue to be that perfect child. With that thought, Kaida ran over to the door and picked up a baseball bat. When his father tried to grab him again, he hit him hard on the head with it, knocking him out. In a panic, after checking to make sure he was still breathing, Kaida grabbed all of his own cash, his father's cash, his guitar, and the run away bag he'd kept and updated over the years. He jumped on the train and promised himself that he was never looking back.
After a lot of aimless train rides, staying in run-down motels, and doing odd jobs working on the cars of strangers, Kaida ended up in realizing that he couldn't continue on that way. He felt like a failure, but he was too hungry and too tired to keep running. Besides, he wasn't just running from his father anymore, he also had to run from the police who'd figured out he was a minor living on the run somewhere along the way. So, Kaida went home.
His father wasn't too thrilled to see him. In fact, he didn't even seem angry. He was just cold and far too collected. When Kaida asked him if he could ever forgive him, his father told him the answer was no before telling him that he was sending him to a school away from their town, Samezuka Academy. Kaida was actually hurt that his father was willing to send him away even though he'd run from him, but all in all it just fueled his hatred of the man. Even though he didn't believe it was going to be possible at first, Kaida actually enjoyed Samezuka. His personality had begun to change when he'd originally ran away from home, but being at Samezuka just set it in stone. His personality might have changed for the worse, but he was definitely a happier person.
