Known Family/Friends:
- Margaret Alston - Mother - Alive - Karen's overbearing, feminist and status-obsessed mother. Their relationship is mostly amiable except for her constant grooming of Karen, much to the latter's chagrin. They often go out on the town, shopping together for clothes and meet up for dinner after Karen's club activities. She expects success from her daughter in almost every area of her life but is completely oblivious to Karen's more hidden, rebellious side (seeing older men, staying out late and underage drinking). An older woman in her early 40's, it's apparent that she's had some "work done". She is likely the culprit behind Karen's shortcomings.
- James Alston - Father - Alive - Karen's workaholic father who is somewhat absent from her life, even now that they live in Japan. He works as the owner of a company that manufactures various types of clothing. Unknown to his family, his business is failing and his presence is often required at the workplace to take control. Not that he minds, as he's been quarreling with his wife quite recently concerning financial problems. A tall, blonde man in his late 40's, he is often downtrodden or stressed whenever he appears and is one of few words.
- Narumi Higashi & Hiriko Kajiwara - Friends - Alive - The two female classmates who are the closest to Karen in terms of friendship. They both befriended the foreigner during her first days at school, which were the hardest for Karen and they've been a formidable posse ever since. Around school they notably follow the blonde around, staring anyone down who dared to question her. They, along with Karen, are responsible for much of the gossip that circulated around Iwatobi High. Hiriko is in the same grade as Karen, though she does not share her class and Narumi is a year younger than the two. Narumi is a petite redhead who often sported pigtails, while Hiriko is a lean brunette who usually kept her hair parted with barrettes. They cheer Karen on (along with Mrs. Alston) during her team's competitions, shouting her name much to the annoyance of those who sat nearby.

Personality: Karen Alston, while refined and educated, is somewhat of a bitch. She believes she is of a higher moral standing and judges others accordingly based on their actions. Part of her believes she is guiding others in the right direction, while mostly it functioned to stroke her own ego. In thanks to a sheltered lifestyle, her grasp on social cues is lacking and often says the wrong thing at the wrong time, fueled by a certain honesty that always made making friends difficult. A cultural barrier could play a part in her interactions, but Karen usually adjusted just fine to Japanese customs and expectations though slip-ups do occur. She says what she thinks, and isn't afraid of whose feelings were hurt in the process. Perhaps she found being nice too boring, too easy or maybe proving her superiority over others was an excellent if combative way of fighting her insecurities. It certainly serves as a nice cushion for when she suffered from her own failure. Karen also kept her more rebellious activities a secret. If they were made known to her family and friends, she'd not only get in big trouble but also be forever known as Iwatobi's biggest hypocrite.
Intimidating and making things awkward between her and another classmate is a favorite activity in school, though she made certain her words were mostly innocent. It was how she said them that created hostility. When speaking to others, she always maintains eye contact and speaks in a clear, understandable and yet condescending tone which unnerves her Japanese peers. Her heritage became a common topic in school, talking about her days back in the states and how different it was there and how much she's changed since. Karen displays a proud exterior of being a westerner, despite those who found themselves unsure of how to approach her. Between her two friends, gossip is commonly circulated, spreading rumors across the school far and wide about anything and anyone. She stuck her nose where it didn't belong, spying on her classmates as other's lives were quite fascinating to the blonde in spite of her self-centered persona.

History: Karen was born in the United States of America, to a Margaret and James Alston in the state of Connecticut. They lived a lavish lifestyle thanks to a convenient trust fund started by James', father ensuring the family would never have to worry about a penny. At a young age, Karen was pampered and spoiled unhealthily, but her mother attempted to ground her with a sense of respect for those less fortunate. This had questionable success, as Karen bullied the small children in her public school during her Elementary years. While she played with her numerous toys and enjoyed the dresses she was given, her parents fought as their love seemed to be dwindling. Before they had Karen, they lived a more bohemian lifestyle and traveled the world. Margaret pleaded to her husband to return to those days; Karen would simply have to adjust. At first James protested, replying that it wasn't sensible at all to uproot what they had so far as they were perfectly content living in America. In retrospect James' business wasn't doing so well, and neither was his marriage. A family friend (and a co-graduate of James from the business university they attended) by the name of Haruko Iwamoto, invited the family to move to his hometown as it could possibly have ample employment opportunities for James to set up, and Margaret would enjoy the beautiful scenery and culture. He also insisted Karen would get by just fine as well, and offered to help the family settle in. The Alstons' were no stranger to Japan as they had vacationed there before. With much pleading, James finally agreed to move to the town of Iwatobi, of course not before the family had learned to speak Japanese; they were already plenty cultured thanks to their traveling, save for their daughter.
Karen, age 13, struggled to fit in at her school in Iwatobi. She felt isolated, distanced and somewhat of an outcast due to her background. Though she spoke nearly perfect Japanese, her behaviors and instincts that she couldn't leave behind were well intact and clashed with her peers who picked fun at her for the way she act and looked, which was exceptionally uncommon in that part of Japan. It wasn't until a year or so later that she developed her current Queen Bee persona, taking advantage of the way she made others stop and stare at her for her westerner appearance. By this time she had confidants in two girls, Narumi and Hiriko who verbally brutalized anyone who stepped in Karen's way and arguably had her back better than any friends she had in America. She gained the reputation as somewhat of a bully and gossip, which heavily contrasted with her situation when she first arrived within the country. Her rekindled confidence and sense of superiority was full bloom, and she joined the Swim Club and Student Council to feed her taste for competition and leadership, respectively.
